VOC directive 2007 - Solvents Emissions Directive & regulations

Solvent Emissions Directive

With the EuropeanSolvent Emission Directive (1999/13/CE) already in force since 2007, only two real alternatives previously existed for flexo printers that partly or completely use solvent-based inks: Either spend a large amount on incinerators (RTO´s) or undertake a significant investment in solvent recovery systems.

With the VOCUS, we now provide a better solution that not only offers flexo printers a clean and green technology, but more importantly, significant cost savings over incineration or recovery.

Reduce VOC emissions

The Solvent Emissions Directive states that every flexographic printer that uses more than 15 tons of solvents a year must reduce their VOC emissions. They are being forced either to find alternatives for 75 percent of their solvent-based inks or invest in end-of-pipe-technology to reduce their solvent emissions.

Solvents still entrenched in the Flexographic sector

The requirements for fast-drying flexographic inks are determined by the nature and demands of flexo printing and the application of the printed product. Flexographic printing inks are primarily formulated to remain compatible with the wide variety of substrates used in the process.

For some substrates and end-use applications, it is possible to replace solvent-based inks with water-based inks. However, in most situations it is not possible to fully replace solvent-based inks, which primarily contain alcohols and esters as VOC's in concentrations from 50% to 70% at press viscosity.

The VOCUS allow us in complying our customers with the solvent emissions directive and to help them to meet the requirements of the steadily growing market.

Summarized: you want to use solvent based inks while emission requirements are met, than VOCUS is the system for you. Contact us for more details.
